Pre-Installation Checklist

Loosen the lug nuts on both sides of the front or rear end being serviced.
Secure the vehicle with ramps and jack stands before suspension work begins.
Identify the shock absorber upper and lower mounting points and the balance bar attachment points.
Check the vehicle-specific torque specifications for the shock absorber and the manufacturer-specified torque for the balance bar before final tightening.

Installation Steps

Park on a level surface, engage the parking brake, loosen the applicable lug nuts, and secure the vehicle with ramps and jack stands.
Remove the upper shock tower bolts or nuts. If they are beneath the trunk lining, lift the lining for access and remove the fasteners with a ratchet and socket.
Disconnect the shock from the suspension using a socket set or nut splitter. Apply penetrating solvent if access for the splitter is insufficient.
Remove the old shock absorber from the lower and upper mounting bolts, wiggling it free if necessary.
Fit the new shock onto the suspension control arm, compressing the shock as needed and using assistance to raise the suspension so the mounting bolts align correctly.
Reattach the shock, install the bolts hand-tight, reinstall the upper tower nuts, verify the required torque specifications, and complete final tightening. Repeat for the other shock absorbers if necessary and reinstall the wheels.
Locate the balance bar attachment points on both sides of the frame and suspension system, then loosen and remove the attachment fasteners with a socket wrench.
Remove the old balance bar after all attachment points have been loosened.
Place the new balance bar in the position of the old bar and align the mounting holes.
Hand-tighten the balance bar connection bolts first, then use a torque wrench to tighten them to the torque value specified by the manufacturer.

Post-Installation Verification

Confirm each shock absorber is correctly seated at its upper and lower mounting points.
Verify shock mounting fasteners are tightened to the applicable vehicle torque specifications.
Confirm the balance bar is aligned correctly and all connection bolts are torqued to the manufacturer-specified value.
Confirm the wheels are reinstalled correctly and the lug nuts are tightened securely before driving.

Troubleshooting

If a shock mounting nut is difficult to remove and a nut splitter cannot be positioned, apply a suitable penetrating solvent where appropriate.
If a shock is difficult to remove from the mounting bolts, carefully wiggle it free; removal can be harder when studs and a retaining bracket are used.
If the new shock does not align with the mounting bolts, compress the shock as needed and use assistance to raise the suspension into position.
