A CV Axle Shaft Assembly is a key drivetrain component that transfers engine power from the transmission or differential directly to the drive wheels.
In most passenger vehicles such as sedans, crossovers, and SUVs, the axle is commonly called a halfshaft because each side of the vehicle uses one axle shaft to drive the wheel. Together, the left and right shafts form the vehicle’s drive axle system.

During repairs or parts searches, you may hear several different names referring to the same component, including:
CV Axle, CV Halfshaft, Drive Axle Shaft, Front / Rear Drive Axle
These terms are often used interchangeably in service manuals and auto repair shops.

A simple way to recognize a CV axle:

A CV axle shaft assembly is made up of several key components that allow power to transfer smoothly from the drivetrain to the wheels.

  • Outer CV Joint – Connects to the wheel hub and allows steering movement

Why Are CV Axles Different on the Left and Right Side?

Most vehicles use two CV axles on the front drivetrain — one for the driver side (left) and one for the passenger side (right). Because the transmission is not perfectly centered, the two axles are often different in length and joint design.

For this reason, replacement axles are typically sold as:

  • Front Left (Driver Side)
  • Front Right (Passenger Side)

Vehicles with AWD or independent rear suspension may also have rear CV axles, which are also installed on the left and right sides.
